Dressing for a Winter Photoshoot
Make your memories look adorable
Even if you do not plan to bring any special clothing for your romantic photo shoot, we recommend putting some thoughts into your outerwear.
Let us give you a few simple pointers on what to wear!
1. Be who you are
We know some people can get stressed about what to wear. You need to feel comfortable in your own skin. It doesn’t need to be a fancy dress or black suit, you can come up with a quirky outfit representing who you are.
Being you is the most important thing you can do at your photo shoot.
We want to capture photos of who you are, not what others look like.
2. Dress to be warm and comfortable
The snow season in northern Finland usually begins in November and lasts at least until mid April. Whether you are attending a private event and/or a photo session outdoors, warm clothing is necessary. Even with mild cold you will quickly freeze while staying out longer than ten minutes.
Wear thermal underwear, you can hide it well under most kinds of clothing
Wear layers, it is always easier to take off clothing rather than freeze
If you are planning to wear a long (wedding) gown, use warm trousers underneath the skirt
Wear a cute scarf, beanie and mittens (woollen accessories look excellent in winter photos)
Don’t forget about your feet, you don’t want to get them wet and cold! If you have them, wear waterproof boots and thick warm socks. We suggest not to wear boots with heels, it will be easier to walk on the snowy ground with flat, good grip boots.
3. Choose your colors
Some fabrics and colors look better than others in front of the camera lens. This is because light hits color and fabric in unique ways, some more flattering than others.
We highly recommend you wearing something that isn’t entirely white, you may just blend in too much with the background if there is a lot of snow.
To create a timeless look for your photos we recommend a neutral color scheme with no big logos or graphics. This ensures your photos won’t look dated within a couple of years and it allows the viewer to focus on you.
Dark colours can work well but do avoid wearing a full outfit of black or gray. If you have a dark coat or trousers try and accessorize with some warmer colors to add some contrast. We also urge you to wear some bold colors!
Some colors that work especially well with snow are:
Deep crimson reds
Soft pastel pinks
Deep olive greens
4. Bring a few cute accessories along
Have your scarf, gloves and hat handy. Some people may not want them in the photo, but picking up a cute set of accessories can really highlight your photos.
A beautiful bouquet or wreath can also add that extra special character to your photos. Feel free to ask for advice on arrangements for these, we have some great local suppliers.
5. Communication
People often send photos snapped with their phones of the clothing they are thinking about wearing, we are always happy to give feedback.
We can also accommodate outfit changes if you are interested in a few different looks out of your photoshoot depending upon the time frame.
