These tips will help you on our next photo shoot

There are some tools and tricks we have learned to use along the way about couple poses

As a romantic event planner, one of our favourite parts of work is couples photography. Whether we’re doing wedding photography, engagement pictures or just a couple photoshoot there are some tools and tricks we have learned to use along the way about couple poses.

These tips will hopefully help you on our next portrait photo shoot.

  • Clothing:
People's mindset is often aided by what they wear. We always tell our guests to wear something that makes them feel confident, as well as comfortable in.

To give a sense of connection and so that your clothing can complement each other, you can try to coordinate outfits. However, this doesn’t mean you have to be dressed the same way! Instead wear colors that compliment each other.

  • We take care of you:
Posing for a photoshoot can be a bit stressful for anyone who hasn’t done it before. When we start the couple's photoshoot, we try to help you relax and direct you with the posing on the way.

We want you to look lovely in the photos, so we will tell you if you need to adjust your hair or clothes. Especially long hair can get wild while shooting outdoors, so sometimes we use a comb or some hairpins to get it under control.

  • Preparation:
It’s a good idea to look into couple photography poses before the session.
    Some couple pose categories are:
    - Standing poses
    - Leaning on a wall
    - Walking holding hands
    - Kissing
    - Sitting

We start by giving the couple suggestions from these few basic pose ideas. Then we let the couple interpret for themselves what the pose should look like. A mixture of different poses is good and will keep you from growing uncomfortable and bored.

Not every pose will work for every couple, and that’s okay. Be open to experimenting with different poses and adjusting the ones you like. The more poses you try, the closer you’ll get to having a successful photoshoot.

  • Talking about your romance:
The great thing about working with couples is that they can interact and help each other fall into natural poses and situations. Sometimes we will try to help you by setting the right mood and ask how you met, the things you like to do together, or the things you like about each other.

This helps you to relax and not feel so awkward as some people might feel in front of the camera. When you’re thinking or talking about your romance, this will show through in your mood and poses.

  • A tender moment - gently hold the other person’s face:
To create intimacy in your photos, we sometimes ask the couple to hold each other’s faces. You can gently caress each other’s cheeks or just hold a face with both hands. Look into each other’s eyes while doing this.

  • Hold hands and go for a walk:
The classic hand-holding couple pose might be a bit cliché, but it never gets old. As the couple walks, they might have a conversation, laugh, or point out something around them. This is the perfect time for shooting spontaneous and authentic couple photos.

After a walk we might ask you to look in one direction together. Looking in one direction symbolises strong values and you’ll look like a powerful duo in your photos.

  • Hug from behind:
There are different ways to hug a person. Instead of hugging each other directly, the couple can try a hug from behind. This will let us photograph both of the couple’s faces at once. Because faces are so close, we can take romantic close-up photos.

  • Whisper something funny into the other person’s ear:
This is another pose that we can use to take cute pictures of couples. We ask the couple to share jokes, say something silly, or just whisper gibberish into their partner’s ear. You’re guaranteed to get a lot of unexpected reactions on photos!

  • Dance like nobody's watching:
Dancing is an awkward activity for many people, especially when there’s a camera pointing at them. This is exactly why you should try to dance! The awkwardness will inevitably make you laugh. This will help to loosen up, which might lead to a lot of joyful couple portraits.

We will guide your couple poses through easy instructions throughout the photo session, but don’t forget to be yourself if you want to try something different!

Our most important aim is to make you feel comfortable, create a nice environment, so you love will shine through photographs!
